How to Fix a Clogged Extrusion Gear

Abnormal Phenomenon

The extrusion gear makes a sound, but there is no filament extruding from the nozzle.

Root Cause Analysis

1.The failure of the throat cooling fan causes the filament near the extrusion gear to be heated and softened.

2.The nozzle is clogged.

Solution

  1. Turn on the M5 printer and click Control > Move on the touchscreen to raise the Z-axis of the nozzle assembly to 200mm, then move it to the middle of the X-axis. Remove the filament and then power the M5 printer off(waiting for the hotend cooling down).

  1. Press and hold the pneumatic joint of the guide tube on the nozzle assembly, and then pull out the PTFE guide tube.

  1. Use the H2.0 hex wrench to loosen the four screws on the back of the nozzle assembly, and then remove the upper cover and nozzle cover of the nozzle assembly.

  1. Manually remove the upper cover and the middle cover, and use the H2.5 hex wrench to remove the extrusion clamp screw.

  1. Open the extrusion clamp to check whether there is a blockage in the extruder. If there is a blockage, preheat the nozzle to 220°C, then use the needle-nose pliers to clamp the filament and pull it out.

  1. When the filament is blocked at the lower part of the extruder and the needle-nose pliers are not clamping the consumables: preheat the nozzle to 220°C, hold the H1.5 hex wrench to the filament and squeeze down to make the filament flow out of the nozzle.

  1. Reinstall the extrusion clamp, the upper cover of the extruder assembly, and the extruder shield.
  2. If the above methods did not resolve the issue, it is recommended to replace the nozzle or the hotend. Please refer to the following articles and videos for detailed instructions.
